Mouth cancer is also known as oral cancer and can affect the tongue, the roof of the mouth, the lips or the gums. There are different grades of mouth cancer, but often it is associated with the formation of tumours in any of the aforementioned areas. The type of mouth cancer is categorised by the type of cell the cancer first starts in.
What causes mouth cancer?
While the exact cause of cancer is not known, lifestyle factors such as smoking, heavy drinking and excessive sun exposure to the lip area are known risk factors.
